What is kiotsuke.com?by dcs
In the spirit of, well, joining spirits, kiotsuke.com helps people to bring their attention together for meaningful discussions. It's not quite a blog, and it's not quite a discussion forum. You'll have to play around to see how it may be useful for you.
If you haven't already created an account, click the big "sign up" button at the top and fill in a few fields. It's quick, and I promise not to spam you.
Next, you can start posting stuff by clicking "new post." Title and Text should be self explanatory, but the Topics field is where things get interesting. Topics can be any word (or hyphenated phrase). Feel free to categorize your post however you want, but you might want to check the topics list (topics button) to see whether your topic fits in with topics that other people have chosen.
If your topic starts with @, the post will be sent to a particular user (@dcs to send to me). If there are no other topics, only I will be able to see your post. If you include other topics, anyone will be able to find your post using the topic list. Think of it as a way to get someone's attention.
If your topic starts with !, the topic won't show up in the list of topics, but people who know your topic will be able to see the stuff you post. For instance, you could start a discussion with your friends by writing the topic !my-special-buddies. Send that link to your friends and have them comment on your posts or write posts to eachother. As long as you keep the ! topic "secret," you'll be able to keep your conversation to yourselves. (In the future, I may allow for other kinds of access controls, but for now, just pick a topic name that is unique...)
The post text uses Markdown for formatting. It's pretty simple, and you don't have to memorize all of the syntax. The important things to remember are:
emphasize text like this:
URLs will be automatically turned into links
Most video URLs (youtube, vimeo) will be turned into embedded players just by pasting the URL on a line.
include an image like this:
![description of the image](http://someplace.com/hemlock.jpg)
If you have any questions, post something in the /site-help topic.
